"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

I am discovering that my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! involves some sort of automotive discussion nearly every day. Today, the entire class was dedicated to what my teacher called, "the single greatest marketing failure and the single greatest marketing success ever." Y'all on Oppo are smart. What two things were we talking about?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
EDIT: A couple people guessed correctly (or half-correctly), but in this case the first guess was also the correct one. Jared Rose got it, the best and worst marketing efforts in history, according to our marketing teacher, were these two:

Both can be contributed to Ford. Edsel and Mustang is my guess. The Edsel was just such a huge success

The greatest success could've been the debut of the Mustang at the world's fair, the greatest failure mmmaybe the Pinto with the help of Ralph Nader? I remember doing swot analyses for Tesla before they sold their first roadster, and for the SRT viper before the redesign. The least painful market research memories...

This is a great example to use in class.
I am not being sarcastic.

I agree. I work in digital marketing, and it's an excellent example of how a slight mistake can turn into a huge disaster. Certainly a lesson in vigilance. Kinda like how the other night I saw snapchatting a girl, and accidentally posted a certain snapchat to "My Story" instead of sending it to her... Luckily I managed to delete it off there very quickly and only one friend of mine saw it before I took it down. We had a good laugh about it. lol

The Edsel has to be that big failure.
It was almost sad - didn't the campaign range from cinematic stunt driving, celebrity music to the sale of a pony with every Edsel sold?
Now the best one. Hmmm.
Mustang?
DS?
Beetle?

I was going with Model T, but that was more popular, less marketed.
Worst? I don't know about Edsel. So unsexy.
Best: Volkswagen
Worst: Delorean

if you were going for a whole hog marketing and product development for the US market, I would slot the Yugo in dead last.

Haha I went through the same experience when I was in college a few years back. I was a Finance major (hated every minute of it) and my advisor suggested I take a marketing class when I told her about my love of cars. My first marketing professor had a Morgan 2+2 and loved making auto references in his lectures. I switched majors a couple weeks later and never looked back. I found out that every professor brings up their car ownership history and the car business comes up a lot. I loved it so much it led to the job I'm in now doing marketing for a manufacturer. So good choice bud, keep it up!
Also, everyone LOVES talking about Edsel. It's like Marketing Screwups 101...

The problem with the Edsel (aside from the styling) was that when doing market research Ford asked customers what they wanted in a car, not what they wanted to pay for in a car. What resulted was an ugly car that cost much much more than other cars in the same market segment.

Also, the only market research they did was in 1948, 10 years before they made the car.
